The problem
A buyer can now form a shortlist before visiting a single website. If an AI answer leaves you out, recommends a competitor, or states the wrong services, prices, hours or service area, you lose that customer without ever seeing the visit.
These failures usually trace back to fixable causes: inconsistent business details across the web, service pages that never state what you do plainly, pages that do not render for crawlers, or a lack of credible third-party coverage.
Mentions, recommendations and citations are different
We measure three outcomes separately, because each one points to a different fix.
- Mention. The answer names your business.
- Recommendation. The answer presents you as a suggested option for the buyer’s need.
- Linked citation. The answer links to one of your pages as a source.
A citation with no recommendation, or a mention with wrong details, are different problems. A report that blends them hides what to do next.
A practical example
An HVAC company asks us to test “who does same-day furnace repair near Newburgh, NY.” The captured answers name two competitors and cite a directory listing that shows the company’s old phone number.
The work: correct the listing data at its sources, publish a service-area page that states coverage and emergency hours plainly, add structured data that matches what the page shows, and retest the same questions on the agreed dates.
What is included
Buyer question set
A defined set of commercial, comparison and local questions your customers actually ask, agreed with you before testing.
Documented AI answer testing
Runs across the AI search products that matter for your market, with every answer captured.
Competitor mention and citation analysis
Who gets named, recommended and cited instead of you, and which sources the answers rely on.
Business entity consistency
Name, address, phone, services and descriptions aligned across your site, profiles and listings.
Clear business information
Services, products, pricing where you publish it, policies and expertise stated plainly on crawlable pages.
Evidence-backed content
Improvements built on facts you can support: credentials, specifics, process and real examples.
Matching structured data
Schema.org markup that describes only what visitors can see on the page.
Crawl and rendering checks
Confirmation that important content is reachable and readable without relying on scripts that crawlers skip.
Third-party coverage opportunities
Legitimate places your business should be referenced: industry publications, associations, local media and relevant directories.
Referral and conversion tracking
AI referral traffic and conversions recorded wherever the referrer is observable.
How testing is recorded
Every captured answer is logged with the conditions that produced it, so a retest compares like with like.
- Platform and product mode
- Date and time
- The exact query
- Locale and location setting
- Signed-in or signed-out state, and any other relevant settings
- The full answer, its mentions and its cited sources
AI answers vary between runs, users and days. A sampled test set shows patterns and direction. It is not a complete view of what every customer sees.
How the work runs
- Agree the question set and the platforms that matter for your market.
- Baseline: run and capture every question, and record how you and competitors appear.
- Diagnose entity consistency, page content, crawl and rendering, and third-party coverage.
- Implement the highest-impact fixes on your site and listings.
- Retest the same questions under the same conditions and report what changed.
About llms.txt
llms.txt is an optional, experimental file that summarizes a site for tools that choose to read it. We add one when it helps document a complex site, and we describe it as exactly that.
It is not a ranking factor, a universal requirement or a proven way to earn citations. Google states that no special AI text files, markup or schema are needed to appear in its AI features.
What we do not promise
- Guaranteed recommendations or citations from any AI tool
- Wikipedia placements
- Special access to any knowledge graph
- Inclusion in any model’s training data
- Paid, fake or incentivized reviews and mentions
Measurement and its limits
We report sampled mention, recommendation and citation rates per platform, the accuracy of what answers say about you, and conversions from AI referrals where the referrer is visible. Each rate states its denominator: the number of captured answers in the question set.
Many AI-influenced visits arrive with no referrer, and Google reports AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside normal Search Console web data. We say so in every report rather than implying full visibility.
