What is actually different about California

The mistake most businesses make in California is treating it as one market. It is at least four: Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose and San Francisco. Each has a different competitive set, and a strategy that works in Los Angeles can be irrelevant in San Jose.

Distance does real work in California. The state covers coastal metros, a vast agricultural interior, and mountain communities, so "near me" behaves differently than it does in a dense state — the radius a searcher will accept stretches, and a business two towns away is a genuine competitor rather than an irrelevance. Service-area definitions have to reflect where customers will actually travel, not a tidy circle on a map.

What converts in California is a page built for someone reading the one-star reviews first. Generic service copy loses to a page that names the place, states the terms plainly and removes the reason to open a second tab.
