For businesses that means the map pack in one metro is the whole game, and the openings sit in Hilo, Kahului and Kailua-Kona, where the same search returns a thinner and older set of results. Treating the state as one uniform market is the most common way to lose money here.

Hawaii is shaped by separate islands, where the next island is not a drive away, and that geography sets the search radius. Searchers here will look further than they would in a compact state, which widens the competitive set and makes an accurate, honest service-area page more valuable than a generic one.

The search itself is specific: someone who finds an old address on a directory nobody has updated. That is not a browsing session, and it does not reward a homepage.
